EDITED AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TAPE TRANSCRIPT

“ARCHIE LEAGUE MEDAL OF SAFETY” AWARD-WINNING EVENT

ALASKAN REGION

ANCHORAGE CENTER

CONTROLLER: Bret Brown

May 15, 2005

N670SP: Anchorage Center, November six seven zero, sierra papa.

BROWN: November zero, sierra papa, Anchorage Center, good afternoon. How are you doing, sir?

N670SP: I’m doing OK. A little bit stressed out. But otherwise, I’m OK. I’m doing straight and level flight here, I’ve been totally in the clouds.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, do you have an estimation of your whereabouts?

N670SP: I’m trying. Right now it says I’m fifty-three point five nautical miles from Talkeetna. Keeping my tack at …one six nine.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, are you able to climb, sir?

N670SP: I don’t think I could climb. I’ve picked up a small amount of what looks like a little bit of ice here so I’m trying to maintain straight and level. We’ve got about just maybe a millimeter of ice right now. I wouldn’t want to try and climb too much more.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, roger that. Do you have anybody else on board with you that can run the radios or look at the maps?

N670SP: Yes, I do. I have my wife on board.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, yes sir, that’s fine. When I get you a little closer, I’ll have some weather reports for you and we’ll work you down when you get you clear of the train. That be OK?

N670SP: Sounds good. Thanks. November zero sierra papa.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa what’s your distance to Talkeetna right now, sir?

N670SP: Forty-eight point two nautical mile distance to Talkeetna.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, thank you. Let me know when you’re ten miles north of Talkeetna. Ten miles north. The plan is I’m going to take you over Talkeetna, continue toward Anchorage and towards Big Lake and I’m going to slowly step you down to four thousand after we get you past Talkeetna. I have good reports and we’ve got another aircraft down there watching the weather for us. Just keep the wings level and try and keep your altitude above seven thousand. Anywhere in there will be fine. Shouldn’t get too bad of icing and we’ll have you out of this here in about 12 minutes.

N670SP: Alright. Thanks. Yeah. Current altitude is seven thousand, six hundred.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, roger. When we get you on the other side of Talkeetna, we’re going to descend down to four thousand. We should get you out of the clouds and it will be a little rainy down there but we’ll do a slow descent. But I’m going to wait until we get past Talkeetna and hopefully I’ll start picking you up on radar so I can verify your position, then we’ll work you down slow.

N670SP: I can see the ground pretty well before me. I’ve got power lines underneath me now.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa, roger. When the road and the power lines come together, that’s just about going to be Willow. Willow runs right along the railroad tracks. Keep the ground in sight and keep the railroad tracks. The railroad tracks will lead you right to the Willow Airport and it should be about five miles up there.

N670SP: Uh, thanks, November zero sierra papa.

BROWN: November zero sierra papa and I have a place for you to get fuel there, it’s called Denali Flight Service and we’ll talk about that when you get on the ground.

BROWN: Thanks, November nine zero yankee.

N8590Y: Nine zero yankee roger we’ve got him. Looks like he’s rolling out about halfway down the runway.

BROWN: Can you confirm that he’s on the ground and talk to him. And tell him thanks for all the help I do appreciate it.

N8590Y: And center November nine zero yankee he’s on the ground rolling out and he says he appreciates all the help.

BROWN: And November nine zero yankee thank you very much. Have him give us a call and we can get him some fuel or some services.

BROWN: November nine zero yankee I do thank you very much and appreciate your help sir.

N8590Y: Oh sure, it was a pleasure working with you. You did a good job.

BROWN: Alright, you have a great day.
