1. Avoid peak travel times. This is easier said than done as airlines base their travel around peak customer demands. Delays are going to happen, but when they do it is best to be prepared. Take adequate entertainment material. Remember, going to the airport is a big event so make it such. If traveling with small children, keep them happy and entertained and you will be much happier as a result. Portable DVD players, books, iPods, etc. are a big help in keeping your mind occupied during a delay. Delays are inherent in the system we have now and will continue until either the airlines flex their schedules, more controllers are added to the scopes, or Mother Nature decides not to have thunderstorms along your route of flight.
2. Consider traveling the night before or earlier in the day. Kind of goes back to peak travel times, but it's true. Late night flights are often exempt from call for release programs and have fewer delays. Having a martini in Central Park, N.Y. is still very possible at midnight.
3. Take the time to actually look at the route structure that CVG has when considering flight options. If you can get out of a smaller, feeder airport, you may be exempt from some of the historic in trail restrictions that are often placed on high volume hubs. This is a stretch in most cases, but if you can get to New York by way of Long Island MacArthur (ISP), then you will avoid the delays associated with the big three airports.
