Democratic National Convention

Last week NATCA President Paul Rinaldi, Executive Vice President Trish Gilbert and Government Affairs staff attended events at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Specifically, Government Affairs staff attended an event for Governor Tim Kaine, D-Va., which was also attended by Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., a steadfast NATCA ally.

During various events, Government Affairs staff had the opportunity to discuss NATCA’s continued opposition to anti-federal employee legislation. In addition, NATCA sponsored a transportation event attended by various Democratic members of the Transportation Committee.

Two weeks ago, Government Affairs staff also attended the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Enthusiasm Grows as 7th Legislative Activism Class is Held

NATCA held another successful legislative activism class this week in Portland, Ore. There were 20 students in the class, representing 19 different facilities and seven different regions (NAL, NNM, NWP, NCE, NGL, NEA, NSO). Students learned about building relationships with members of Congress, how to take a meeting on the Hill, campaign work, how to conduct a facility tour for a member of Congress, the Hatch Act, the NATCA PAC, and other basics about legislative activism.

"This was our seventh class since we began teaching legislative activism classes in December 2010 and the enthusiasm for NATCA and our legislative efforts continues to grow," National Legislative Committee Chairman Steve Weidner said. "The students in this class were motivated and excited to start doing legislative work on behalf of their union. The NLC is looking forward to getting to work with these new activists as we head into campaign season this fall."
