Last week’s NATCA in Washington legislative conference marked the transition to a new Northwest Mountain Regional Legislative Representative on the National Legislative Committee (NLC) – Richard Kennington (Portland, Ore., PDX).

Kennington, who was hired in 1999 and joined NATCA immediately, has held every position on the PDX local executive board and served as a cadre instructor for recurrent training. He was also the Oregon State Legislative Coordinator.

“So far, being on the NLC has been very rewarding, and I think I am going to enjoy it even more than I thought I would when I first joined,” he said.

"Beyond being the most competent controller possible,” he adds, “I can't think of anything more valuable to do in my career than to work to protect our profession and enhance the safety of the NAS (National Airspace System). And the best way to do that is to take our message to the Hill as a NATCAvist and constituent and educate our members of Congress. They are the decision-makers and their actions affect the NAS.”

Kennington wanted to be a controller since he toured a tower when he was 8 years old. He immersed himself in aviation, earned his pilots license and worked as a dispatcher while he waited to go to Beaver Falls, Pa., to complete the CTI program.

NNM Members can reach Kennington via email,, or phone at 360-909-1402.
