Aerial Photography on Display at PCT

The Professional Aerial Photographers Association International (PAPA), an international organization of 400 professional aerial photographers, has assembled some of their most exquisite aerial photographs for display at Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control (PCT), as a way of saying thank you to the thousands of air traffic controllers who help the photographers go about their jobs each and every day.

“[The exhibit] is our way of giving back and sharing our work,” said PAPA President Laura Boyko.  “We hope to provide the controllers a better understanding of what we do and why we need their assistance.”

In order for the photographers to capture the dramatic images currently on display, they have to coordinate their flight patterns with air traffic control.  Without the assistance of the controllers, the photographs are harder to capture.

Susan Hedenberg, a PCT controller and PAPA member, was the driving force behind the scenes, working with FAA management to get approval for the display.  “By displaying the photos, PAPA is able to thank the hard working controllers and provide them with something tangible for their enjoyment.”  An award-winning aerial photographer herself, Hedenberg’s photos are part of the PCT display.

After the photos went on display, Hedenberg noticed the controllers looked at the aircraft carrying aerial photographers differently.  “When the Airbus A380 flew into Dulles last month, there were several aerial photographers on hand capturing the event on film.  The controllers here in PCT, having seen the photos that result from aerial photography, were very helpful in coordinating the aircraft in that area.”

The exhibit, which was assembled by PAPA Curator Sibylle Allgaier, will be on display at PCT through mid-summer, when it will move to FAA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.  A permanent display of images from local photographers will remain at PCT for the controllers to enjoy.  For further information or to arrange to have an exhibit at your facility, contact Susan Hedenberg at 540-752-6690 or at info@FlyingHAerialPictures.com.  Displays are currently being assembled for Nashville and Miami.
