Wake Turbulence

Gerald Quaye is the Article 114 representative for Wake Turbulence. 

Background: Consolidated Wake Turbulence (CWT) will reduce and streamline the number of wake turbulence separation standards implemented in the national airspace (NAS). There are currently three (3) different orders that prescribe wake turbulence separation for facilities: FAA JO 7110.65, FAA JO 7110.659-RECAT 1.5, and FAA JO 7110.126- CWT. Each order contains different separation minima that often does not work well together, increases workload, creates inefficiencies, and creates a disparity in separation standards between facilities. To maintain safety and increase efficiency, CWT was developed. CWT is a nine (9)-wake turbulence category system that incorporates the most efficient; data driven wake turbulence separation standards. CWT will provide controllers an overall increase in efficiency especially on final and departure. Deployment of CWT began in 2018 and will continue through 2022 culminating with the inclusion of CWT in the 7110.65. Currently there is no plan to incorporate CWT in the enroute environment. 

Wake Re-Categorization (RECAT)  

The wake group continues virtual CWT implementation activities. The 2021 outlook has training and implementation planned for Louisville, Memphis, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Denver.  

The wake group met to discuss ongoing challenges with no-weight aircraft and wake categorization of new aircraft introduced into the NAS. Draft responses as part of the assessment process have been submitted from the NextGen group for a handful of new aircraft.
