Region X Monthly Update | January 2022

Message from Our Region X RVP,

Brothers and Sisters –

Return to the office space status:
As you all are aware the most recent planned dates for the return to the offices have been postponed for a time frame yet to be determined.  The actual new dates will be a function of where we find ourselves across the nation in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.  NATCA will be given 30-days notice of the eventual future planned dates for re-occupancy of the offices.

Although we continue to be in a maximum telework posture, access to the offices is occurring on an as needed basis.  Remember, if you have symptoms or find yourself in a situation where you are taking a COVID-19 test – do not go into the office or for that matter go into the field for those of you who are in a travel status (day trip or TDY).

Vaccine Mandate Executive Orders (EOs):
These EOs are currently not enforceable based on a preliminary, nationwide injunction.  There are appeals ongoing and the final outcome of the legal process may change again in the future.  For our members who may have a pending medical or religious exemption request there is to be no further action on those items while there is an injunction.  Please notify your local representative of any continued implementation by the agency while the current injunction is in effect.  Please also keep in mind that this injunction is also being challenged in the courts and the potential exists that a different ruling(s) may occur in the future and if that occurs the FAA will likely be required to change course again to follow the law at the time of future rulings.  Simply prepare yourself for additional changes moving forward.

NATCA In Washington (NIW):
We are excited to be holding the 2022 NIW March 28th and 29th in Washington, D.C. and will navigate the challenges of COVID-19 protocols and other factors that are subject to change as we approach the event.  This year we have a cap on the number of participants to provide additional social distancing and be as protective of our members health and safety as possible.   I appreciate all of our Region X membership who have raised their hand to participate in this important event and we will be making the tough decisions on who will be able to attend as we have more volunteers than we have slots allocated to Region X.  We will do this quickly and let each of our legislative activists who have requested to attend know if they are approved to schedule leave and make travel arrangements to attend the event as soon as possible.

NATCA Representatives Training 1 (RT-1) 2022:
We are beginning to ease our way back into in-person training events for our members and representatives.  One of the most important training events that our NATCA representatives need to attend is RT-1.  In order to make this training the most effective for our Region X representatives we are going to attempt to earmark available spaces for a group of representatives from each of our bargaining units in the various lines of business for each available training course.  So if you are a representative that has not yet attended RT-1 (formerly known as Basic Representative Training – BRT) please reach out to either your national representative or your principal representative to start the wheels in motion to get you enrolled in the course.  We will also be asking your national or principal representatives as well as your local presidents to reach out to our other representatives across the nation to encourage and help get those reps enrolled in the course.  We currently have course scheduled for March, April, May, July, August, and October. Once a training candidate gets approved at the local level, course registration is easily done as usual in the NATCA Portal.

Post COVID-19 work schedules, telework, and office space of the future:
Much of our membership continues to want to know exactly what the post COVID-19 future of work looks like, so I did not want to omit this topic from this update.  There is nothing new to report on this.  As of right now, we will continue to follow our existing agreements that have been memorialized in the purple and blue book CBAs.  If and when we have anything different, I will immediately notify the representatives across the country as well as send all members a message of any changes or new developments.

2022 Communicating For Safety (CFS):
NATCA’s premier safety conference will be held September 12-14 in Las Vegas.  After a two year pause, we are planning for the return of CFS.  For those of you who have attended before, you know how well this event is planned, presented, and received by all who attend.  This is a professional development training event and attendance is on duty time.  It would be great to see a combination of members who have attended in the past along with new faces from Region X this year.  Please start discussions with your local NATCA leadership if you have an interest in attending.  Due to the pandemic and the lack of travel over the last two years we have built up some healthy local budgets and I would like to see a real Region X presence at this event.  I know you will find it to be eye opening, rewarding, educational, and give you a much bigger view of what we do as a collective union together.

Also our annual Region X Safety Award will be presented at CFS.  You have a chance to recognize and nominate a peer or team that feel has gone above and beyond in their contribution to aviation safety.  Nominations are due by May 5th.

If you want help nominating someone for the Region X Safety Award, email archie-submissions@natca.org

We continue to have many internal virtual meetings and teleconferences.  Please read the always attached virtual monthly meeting notes and contact your national or local representative or local president with your questions or concerns.

Feel free to express your interest in stepping up on union activities or joint work groups. Union engagement work with the FAA provides career expanding developmental opportunities and insight to how the FAA and NATCA function together. If you are interested in stepping up for your union please contact your local leadership!

In Solidarity,

Brad
