NATCA Statement On Shuster Chairmanship Selection
WASHINGTON – The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) today issued the following statement after the House Republican Conference selected Rep. Bill Shuster to continue serving as Chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure:
“We extend our congratulations to Chairman Shuster for his selection to return as Chairman. NATCA has worked well with the Chairman and his staff and we look forward to continuing that relationship.
“In his role as Chairman, Shuster has led Congressional efforts to ensure the modernization of the National Airspace System (NAS) continues. He has also taken important steps to help address the air traffic controller staffing crisis and to help provide funding for the NAS.
“Chairman Shuster understands well the economic value of our NAS. It sustains nearly 12 million jobs and contributes $1.5 trillion to the United States Gross Domestic Product. The Chairman also values the contributions controllers and aviation safety professionals represented by NATCA make in keeping it moving.
“We look forward to continuing the tremendously successful collaborative relationship we’ve built with members on both sides of the aisle in the coming Congress. That collaboration has yielded progress in modernizing the system and positive results for the American people. However, there is more work to be done. The NAS does not have a stable, predictable funding stream and this uncertainty has caused many serious problems for the system. NATCA is prepared to collaborate with all aviation stakeholders to achieve the stable, predictable funding stream necessary to ensure that the United States remains the world leader in aviation."
