Feb. 19, 2016 // This Week’s Notebook: New OSHA Webinar, Seminar Dates, and Much More!

Screen Shot 2016 02 12 at 2.40.48 PMThere are two topics for the February OSHA webinar: water quality and mold. While they are quite different topics, they both can have an effect on the health of building occupants.

Every three years, drinking water quality is tested in FAA buildings. This test includes parameters like copper and lead that can leach from the pipes into the building. Part of the webinar will be devoted to explaining the tests, interpreting the data, and required action if there are concerns identified.

The internet is a great source of data. Sometimes the data is accurate, sometimes it is not. Mold is a lighting-rod topic on the internet and a great deal of what is written is speculative or inaccurate. Part of this webinar will help you to separate fact from fiction on mold in our buildings.

Due to a large amount of requests for NATCA Veterans Day t-Shirts, another order is going to be placed and we want to give you and your facilities an opportunity to participate!

In an attempt to minimize the cost to the members, we ask that each facility designate one point of contact and place one order per facility.

The shirts will be $20 each, plus shipping, which is about $0.50 a shirt, plus a $5.75 drop fee per facility. The shirts are 50/50 material from American Apparel (50 percent combed cotton/50 percent polyester). Five dollars per shirt will be donated to Active Heroes. The last order of t-shirts resulted in a total of $3,530 raised for charity.

Active Heroes is dedicated to connecting and helping America’s military families through physical and mental therapy, home repairs, community outreach, financial assistance, and community integration to halt the triggering points and stress that lead to veteran suicide. For more information on this organization, please visit www.ActiveHeroes.org.

The order will be submitted by close of business Friday, Feb. 26, so get your order in by that morning. Shirts should be at your doorstep by the start of Communicating for Safety 2016. If you’re interested, please email [email protected] with the subject title, “Veterans Shirts 2016.”

Benefit Spotlight: Southern Insurance Group (SIG)
It’s no secret that your Federal Employee Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) costs increase as you age, but did you know that there are alternatives to FEGLI that are much more affordable? Regardless of age, you owe it to yourself to shop competitively for life insurance. Often times there are better options than FEGLI.

To better understand your life insurance benefits and to discuss alternatives to FEGLI, contact the Southern Insurance Group at 800-467-8571.

Cambridge Corner: ETF Basket
Can you name an investment that acts like a stock but looks like a mutual fund? If you said “exchange-traded funds” (ETFs), you’re right on the money. ETFs typically consist of a “basket” of securities that mirror a particular market index. Like stocks, ETFs trade on an exchange and can be bought or sold throughout the trading day. Since most ETFs are designed to follow an index, fund managers generally make changes to their investment lineup only when the underlying index changes. Because the goal is to match the performance of the index, fund expenses tend to be low.
