June 30, 2017 // This Week’s Notebook: NATCA Member in Need; Stay Hydrated With the NATCA Water Bottle; and Disability Insurance
NATCA Member in Need: Justin Mendelson, Colmbia Metropolitan (CAE)
Justin Mendelson has been with the Federal Aviation Administration for the past five and a half years and has been a supporter and member of NATCA since arriving at his first facility in February of 2012.
Unfortunately, in January of 2017, he began having health issues that stemmed from my Inflammatory Bowl Disease. In combination with this, he developed an inflamed pilonidal cyst along with recurrent abscesses that have required multiple surgeries and hospitalizations in the recent months. Justin has now been out of work since the beginning of May of 2017, and has exhausted all available, non-advanced leave.
Just recently, Justin was approved for the VLTP program. If you are able, you may submit donations through the Online VLTP Intranet site.

Member Benefits: Don’t Let the Nightmare Be Yours
It doesn’t matter what it is — things cost money. We’ve all invested heavily in our careers so that we can have a better quality of life for both ourselves, and our loved ones. But one of the inherent risks of this career is that it can be taken from us at a moment’s notice. You know someone this has happened to, because it happens FAR too often. It’s a nightmare. Your livelihood as you knew it is gone and you can no longer support yourself or your family. While you are buried with whatever situation led to losing your career, your bills are piling up and savings can be depleted very quickly. What can you do next to provide for yourself and yours?
While this is obviously a terrible, all-too-common situation, you have the ability to prevent it from being a catastrophic nightmare. You can protect 50 percent of your gross monthly salary for up to five years with tax-free income while you sort out how to move forward. In your career, this situation will happen to someone you know. If that someone is you, how will you move on?
For information on how to keep the unthinkable from become a catastrophic nightmare, visit natcadisability.com.
