NATCA Celebrates Women’s History Month

NATCA is proud to recognize and participate in Women’s History Month, which is celebrated every March. Initially just International Women’s Day, President Jimmy Carter declared in March 1980 that March 8 was the official start to National Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress declared the entire month of March would be recognized as Women’s History Month. Since then, every president has declared the month of March the same.

NATCA would like to take this time to honor women’s contributions throughout American history, especially women’s work as aviation safety professionals. NATCA is a stronger Union and aviation is safer because of the countless contributions women have made to the aviation safety profession and to our Union.

The first documented case of women working as air traffic controllers dates back to World War II, although historians do have a hard time identifying who was the first female ATC. Please click here to learn more about the first female controllers and their important role in U.S. history. As the month continues, NATCA plans to honor and highlight some of the contributions women have made to both our Union and our profession.
